The Definitive Step-by-Step Guide to Shrinking Large Pores

Unfortunately, there is a lot of information on the internet about how it’s difficult to shrink large pores. Depending on what websites you visit, you can even find some that say it is impossible. However, nothing could be further from the truth. It can be difficult to shrink large pores if you’re not willing to change how you take care of your face, but if you’re willing to make that change, you’ll see some incredible results.

Large pores can be bothersome and even embarrassing to those who have them. In addition to being difficult to shrink if you don’t know what to do, they oftentimes have excess oil secretions, which attracts dirt and grime leaving them even more noticeable. While they can be hard to shrink, it is not impossible to get pores to become smaller. Proper care of the face and following the tips listed below can help to shrink large pores on any skin type.

What is a Pore?

To start, it’s important to understand what a pore is. There are two different glands on human skin, sweat glands and sebaceous glands. Sweat glands are found in places such as the armpits and genital areas. Sebaceous glands are oil glands which produce and discharge oily secretions, called sebum, into follicles. Sebum is a combination of cholesterol, proteins, electrolytes, and triglycerides. The follicles where sebum is produced are called sebaceous follicles when they are on the face. Although everyone produces sebum, some people produce it more than others, resulting in oily skin.

Why Are Your Pores Large?

The size of your pores is initially determined by genetics, meaning that if your father or mother had large pores, you are more likely to have them. However, as we get older, other things come into play regarding pore size. Excess sun exposure can cause the collagen to break down under the dermis, leading to the skin being pulled which tugs on the pores making them larger.

Clogged pores are also a cause of large pores. If a pore has excess oil which attracts dirt to it, once the dirt is in the pores it can actually stretch the pore out. This is one reason why having good facial hygiene is imperative. The attraction of dirt can cause blackheads which are easy to see and tend to draw attention to the pores as well.

Aging is another reason for enlarged pores. As people get older, their skin naturally loses elasticity. This can cause it do sag and stretch which can elongate the pores, leading to them increasing in size. Skin can also get thicker as we age, oftentimes due to over exposure to the damaging rays of the sun. This results in the underlying dermis shrinking and losing water, which pulls on the facial skin. Sometimes when this happens, tiny skin cells can begin to show around the pores, making them more noticeable.

There are also some types of make up that can clog pores. Using one of these make ups daily can lead to the pores growing in size over time.

Step 1 – Determine How Often to Wash Your Face

Washing your face daily is key to keeping oil levels down and keeping dirt off of your face. Since everyone has a different skin type, it’s important to determine how often you need to wash your face to do this. People with dry skin can wash their face twice daily and not notice any dirt or oil at all, while people with oily skin may need to wash their face three or four times a day just to keep the oil levels down. To figure out how often you should be washing your face, play around with washing your face at different times throughout the day.

Always start your morning with washing your face to get a clean, fresh start. Women who wear make up may need to take it off as soon as they get home from work or school, depending on how their skin feels. For some, especially with dry skin, they may be able to wear the make up until they go to bed when they should wash their face again. People with oily skin should try and wash more frequently, noting how long it takes for their face to feel oily again.

When you’ve determined how many times a day you need to wash your face to make sure it isn’t oily, keep with that schedule. Always be sure to take make up off before bedtime.

Note: After washing your face it is important to use a toner or astringent afterwards. These products are very inexpensive and can be found in any drug store, make up shop, or online. They can eliminate any soap that may have been left on the skin and they help to naturally tighten the skin and help to shrink large pores. They can also be used for people suffering from acne as the toners and astringents help to keep inflammation at bay.

Step 2 – Always Wear Non-Comedogenic Make Up

It is important to pay attention to labels and only purchase make up that is non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog pores. For anyone fighting large pores, this is a must. Many types of make ups, especially the cheaper drug store kinds, can cause clogging of the pores. Since you need to keep the pores clean to shrink them, you may need to change make ups.

The good news is that there are some pretty great make ups that don’t clog the pores and many of them are mineral based, which means they have zinc in them. Zinc is a natural sunscreen, which can also help with aging of the skin although many of these make ups don’t use a high enough SPF. It is better than nothing, but a true sunscreen should be used, as suggested in Step 3.

One good non comedogenic mineral make up is from a company based out of San Francisco, California called Bare Escentuals. They have a huge line of make up including everything from lip plumpers to powder and everything in between. Although you will pay more for a quality make up that is non comedogenic, it will pay off when it comes to shrinking large pores. The key is that once you change to this type of make up, you need to keep using it for maximum results. Bare Escentuals is just one example of a quality, non comedogenic make up. There are more than a few on the market available in departments stores, cosmetic shops, and online.

Many companies which sell make up that is mineral based have what they call starter kits. These kits have smaller sized versions of everything you need to do your face. They make these so you can try all of their make up without spending a lot of money buying the full size which you may not use. They are a great way to try these make ups and the kits come in a variety of colors to match any skin tone.

Step 3 – Always Use a High SPF Sunscreen

Sunscreen is crucial to not only keeping the skin looking young, but it helps to protect valuable collagen which can cause large pores when it’s integrity is compromised. Most dermatologists suggest a sunscreen with a SPF of 50+ for the face, especially for people who have premature aging or large pores.

The key to using sunscreen is to know how and when to apply it. Studies have found that most people don’t apply enough and they also don’t put it on frequently enough. When applying sunscreen to the face, it should be put on liberally, and take a couple minutes to rub in. Sunscreen naturally gets absorbed by the body and can come off, so reapplying it every few hours is important unless you’re going to be in the sun directly. Then, you need to reapply it more frequently, such as every two hours.

If you’re going to be out in the sun, it’s important to stay in the shade as much as possible and wear a hat when you can. If you’re going to be doing something in direct sunlight, such as playing volleyball on the beach, just remember to reapply frequently and liberally.

Step 4 – Exfoliate Your Skin

When you take the time to exfoliate your skin, it helps to keep dirt and grime from getting into the pores. It can also greatly help with keeping oil levels down. When you exfoliate your face, it also gets rid of dead skin cells which can work themselves into the pores, causing the pores to get larger.

How often you should exfoliate your skin can also be determined by starting to do it and see how it feels afterwards. Those with dry skin need may need to exfoliate less often as it can dry out the skin, although those with oily skin may need to do it several times a week.

While you can buy exfoliating facial scrubs in drug stores, cosmetic shops, and online, it is pretty easy to make them yourself at home. All you need to do is type in “exfoliating face mask” into any search engine and numerous recipes will come up. Often, you’ll have all the ingredients you need right in your kitchen cupboards. Not only can this save a lot of money, but the ingredients you’re putting on your skin are also healthier for your body.

Although you can usually determine how often you should exfoliate by the way your skin feels, it is important to not exfoliate too often. This is especially true for those with oily skin. What happens when you exfoliate too much is that your skin can sense the lack of oil on it and try to overcompensate by creating more oil. This is why it is so important to pay close attention to your skin when you begin exfoliating on a regular basis.

When exfoliating it’s important to remember not to scrub hard. Let the tiny granules work by themselves and they will do the job properly. If you scrub too hard, you can actually make the pores larger by scrubbing away too much skin, and tugging on the skin too much causing the pores to open larger.

Step 5 – Pay Attention to the Temperature

If you want to know how to shrink large pores, it is important to understand how temperatures work on the skin. When your skin is warm or hot the pores begin to open. This can happen after a hot shower or being in the sun. When the skin begins to cool down, the pores begin to close.

After being in warm temperatures or water, make sure to close the pores as soon as possible by simply splashing cool water on your face. This is also something you should do after washing or exfoliating your face to keep the pores tight and help them to stay clean.

Another important time to wash your face is after working out, especially if you tend to sweat or perspire a lot. As you sweat, your body becomes warmer, opening up the pores. As sweat or perspiration begins to drip down your face, any dirt can enter the pores which are larger because of the heat. This can lead to them getting dirty and causing blackheads, which can stretch the pores out again.

One nice treat for your skin can be to wrap an ice cube in a waterproof cloth or small bag and gently rub it over your face after washing. The coolness of the ice cube will help to shrink large pores and can also be invigorating in the morning, getting you off to a great start.

Step 6 – Avoid Touching Your Face Throughout the Day

Anyone who is self conscious about their face may have the tendency to fidget or feel their pores out of habit. Breaking this habit will help to keep dirt off of the face and allow it to stay clean, keeping the pores small. It can be difficult at first, especially when people don’t realize they are doing it. When you try to pay attention, you can stop this habit which will help to speed up the process of shrinking large pores.

Step 7 – Become a Savvy Consumer

Buying just any skin care product can lead to more damage than good. It’s important to read the labels and make sure you’re not using any products containing oil. When you look at the ingredients lists on something like moisturizer, make sure that water or glycerine is one of the highest listed ingredients. Companies are required to list the most prominent ingredients first so you should see either of these at the top of the list.

If you purchase a product that is oil based, it just defeats the purpose of taking such good care of your skin and trying to minimize the oil that is on it. You will just be adding to the problem. In addition to not adding oil to the face, a good water based moisturizer will help to make your skin feel smooth and soft.

Because we tend to put more emphasis on our faces, thus wshaing them more, applying makeup and pore clogging’ chemicals. Therefore, the glands under the facial skin try to clean all of that gunk out of the pores and make and secrete more oil from the sebacian gland, thus making the face more vulnerable to oil and breakouts, acne, pimples, etc. There, did that help my look alike, haha!TIP: Drink lots of water for a more clear transparent and opaque skin
